ABSTRACT

Ice and water damage on agricultural plants in Danmark

About 1.08 million ha, or 38% of the total agricultural area in Denmark, are used for overwintering crops.

The crops are damaged in some years. Statistically, Denmark has very cold winters only 1 year out of 10. The winters 1984-85, 1985-86 and 1986-87 were extremely hard and the winter-barley area fell from about 200 000 ha in 1984 to about 60 000 ha in 1987 because of crop failure. The winter 1987-88 was very mild and no winter damage occurred.

The winter damage seen in Danmark is primarily frost damage combined with windy weather conditions. Some times ice encasement occurs.

The overwintering problems which occur in some years in Denmark resemble the conditions which prevail in the other Scandinavian countries.

Key words: frost damages, overwintering crops, winter damages.

YFIRLIT

Svellkal og drukknun ß tvÝ- og fj÷lŠrum jurtum Ý Danm÷rku

═ Danm÷rku eru um 1,08 milljˇn hektarar af tvÝ- ea fj÷lŠrum pl÷ntum, og er ■a 38% af rŠktunarlandinu. Kalskemmdir eru fßtÝar. T÷lfrŠilega eru einungis einn af hverjum tÝu vetrum mj÷g kaldur. Veturnir 1984-1985, 1985-1986 og 1986-1987 voru mj÷g kaldir og rŠktun ß vetrarbyggi minnkai ß ■essum ßrum ˙r 200 000 hekturum niur Ý um 60 000 hektara vegna uppskerubrests. Veturinn 1987-1988 var mj÷g mildur og kalskemmdir engar.
