ABSTRACT

The experiment describes results of chemical analyzis of roots of red clover and bromegrass under anoxia during different growing conditions. During flooding the ADH-activity increased significantly. In red clover the soluble proteins also increased slightly during flooding but not in bromegrass. Both species accumulated less malate under anoxia than under normal conditions. Red clover seems not to have the ability to use root carbohydrates for energy release under anoxia as the more flooding tolerant bromegrass does. Flooded plants increase the ADH-activity and content of soluble proteins and carbohydrates but decrease the content of malate as the conditions change from 20░C/18 h to 18░C/16 h but decrease the ADH-activity and soluble proteins and increase the content of malate and carbohydrates as the condition changes from 10░C/12 h to 4░C/8 h.
