ABSTRACT

The correlation between moisture content and cold tolerance in Poa alpina and Festuca vivipara was studied. Water stress was induced by application of water-stress hormone (abscisic acid, ABA), polyethylenglycol (PEG) or dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) - a potential cryoprotectant - for 1, 7 or 14 days at 6 or 18░C. ABA reduced the cold tolerance and increased the moisture content of F. vivipara but did not have any significant effect on P. alpina during 2 weeks of incubation. PEG reduced the moisture content, and the cold tolerance increased concurrently. DMSO, at the concentrations used, had highly toxic effects on F. vivipara but increased the cold tolerance of P. alpina. There was no correlation between moisture content and cold tolerance indicating that DMSO has other effects than simply reducing moisture content. The cold tolerance was in all cases higher at the lower (6░C) than the higher incubation temperature (18░C).
