Moved to Sweden and started to work on my Ph.D. degree at the Department for Production Ecology, Faculty of Forestry, The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU). Taking courses, analysing data, writing articles, doing lab work. I defended my Ph.D. degree in Forest Ecology (Ecophysiology) in February 2001.
1994 –1996 Research site manager

3. Some main research and development projects
Nordic Centre of Advanced Research on Environmental Services (CAR-ES) (2005-2010)
I The objective of this CAR is to study the effects of forest management, including afforestation, on the following major environmental services: carbon sequestration, water protection and biodiversity. I am one of three members of the steering committee and I lead the work on carbon sequestration by forestry. All the Nordic and the Baltic countries have representatives within this project. CAR-ES) is financed by SNS (co-Nordic research fund for forestry related research). The other PI’s are Per Gundersen (KVL, Denmark) and Jan Weslien (SKOGFORSK, Sweden). The project group consists of 11 research groups from all the Nordic and the Baltic countries.
Project manager for the ELF project (2002-present)
ELF (Establishment of a Long-term Forest research sites in Iceland) is a project funded by the Iceland Forest Service and the Ministry of Agriculture, where about 100 ha of a treeless landscape will be afforested, to create large (5000 m2) plots, set-up in a randomised block design, where various tree species grown as monocultures and in different mixtures. This is to study how biodiversity, carbon sequestration and wood production can be optimised in Icelandic forestry.
Nordic Center of Excellence of carbon flux studies: NCEE (2003-2008) www.necc.nu
NECC “The Nordic Center for Studies of Ecosystem Carbon Exchange and its Interactions with the Climate System” is a co-operation between Swedish, Danish, Finnish and Icelandic research groups, which are doing studies on the biosphere-atmosphere interactions of terrestrial and/or aquatic ecosystems. I am a country representative and have a chair in the steering board. In Iceland the work of one PhD student and one PostDoc is funded through the project. The group’s coordinator is Prof. Anders Lindroth, Lund University.
Coordinator for the EFG-project (1994-1996; 2001-present).
EFG stands for “Experimental Forest of Gunnarsholt” This is a 15 ha experimental forest of single clone of Populus trichocarpa that was planted in 1990 as a facility to do environmental studies on how afforestation changes both biotic and abiotic factors. A number of Nordic and European research projects have been conducted at EFG.
